International Mind-Body Wellness Day: Finding your balance in 2022

Happy new year! 2022 has started, and with this happy new year, you must ask yourself the question: Do you have a “happy” mind and a “happy” body?

3 January marks International Mind-Body Wellness Day. On this day, we celebrate all of the amazing things the mind and body can do when working together! This day was created to promote the concept of using the mind and body together to create balance and wellbeing. There are many different ways to achieve mind-body wellness, and every person will have their own unique approach. This is the best time of year to reflect on your overall health and get inspired to get yourself back on track again to achieve that balance. Let’s take a look at a few ways to do so.

How to get yourself back on track again

  1. Set some health goals.

Start by assessing your lifestyle. What are the stressors in your life? What is your weight compared to last year? How much energy do you have? How many times have you been sick this year? How healthy do you eat? How physically active are you?

It’s important to set realistic goals to avoid feeling discouraged if you can’t reach them all straight away. Also, remember that no goal is too small. If your goal is to drink more water and walk at least 10000 steps a day, then that’s perfect. Whatever works for you.

Pick an activity or sport that interests you. Doing a dance class or going for a walk might not seem like actual fitness classes, but you are definitely going to burn some calories and get the heart pumping while enjoying what you’re doing!

  1. Get some new fitness wear/gear

With your health goals set, get yourself some new gear! There is nothing like a brand-new workout outfit to get you in the mood for some movement. Head to Sandton City’s Nike store for some awesome activewear. Also, think about investing in a fitness watch. Don’t be shy to ask the experts at the iStore and Samsung what will work best for your needs.

  1. Make a long-term commitment

Joining a gym or exercise class for an extended period like a one-year contract can help you stay on track. If possible, get a personal trainer to help you get started. Finding a friend who will support your healthy lifestyle changes is also a great way to stay motivated. Joining a team or having a workout friend help foster a feeling of accountability towards each other’s goals. It also helps you not feel so alone on your journey to a better you. Sandton Central has a variety of gyms you can become a part of. For something different, join the family at the Urban Warrior Boxing Ring.

  1. Determine your dietary needs

Do you ever feel like you’re eating all the “right” foods but still not getting the results you want? You’re not alone. Figuring out your dietary needs can be a daunting task, but it’s worth taking the time to do it right. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of what we should eat. What works for one person may not work for another, and what we need to maintain optimal health can vary from day to day.

It’s worth it to go see a dietician that can help you find the perfect diet that’s right for you. They will be able to guide you through the process of determining your dietary needs and making changes that will help you reach your goals. When establishing what is the best for you, head to the Wellness Warehouse for the best quality health foods. For some dietary supplements, don’t forget about Xtreme Nutrition.

  1. Meditate

Meditation is a wonderful way for us to restore balance between mind and body. It is often seen as a way to relieve stress, and while that is certainly one of its benefits, it’s far from the only one. In fact, meditation has various benefits that can improve your mental and physical health. From reducing anxiety and depression to helping you lose weight or lower your blood pressure, there are plenty of reasons to give meditation a try. So, if you’re looking for an easy way to improve your wellbeing, meditation may be just what you need.

If it’s something that is new to you, download a meditation app on your phone like Headspace or start with some easy meditation videos on YouTube.

  1. Get outside and have fun.

Studies have shown that people who spend time outside are happier, less stressed, and more creative. In addition to improved moods and creativity levels, studies show that spending time in natural environments can also reduce blood pressure and heart rate. Spending time outside has been linked with lower rates of depression, anxiety, obesity, and insomnia too. There’s a reason why so many doctors recommend getting out into nature on a regular basis!

So, make it an obligation to get outside at least once a day. Take a stroll in Sandton Central’s parks and enjoy the beauty of nature around you. You’ll get Vitamin D, and it will have a calming effect on you.
