School’s out – what can I do with the kids?!

School’s out for the summer, but that can mean the opposite of a vacation for parents. Though it’s always wonderful to have the little ones around, having to entertain a troupe of overexcited kids 24/7 without the usual break of the school week can be exhausting.

Figuring out how to occupy them can also be a mental stretch. There are only so many times you can throw on the same Peppa Pig DVD and hope the kids won’t notice the ending keeps turning out exactly the same. Thankfully, at Sandton Central, we have a whole range of fun activities to keep your little ones occupied over the December break so that you can get some much-needed relaxation in too.

  1. Watch A Movie at Ster Kinekor

There’s very little more exciting to tots than a trip to the movies! Giant slush puppies, buttery popcorn and exciting adventure await in the theatres of Ster Kinekor Sandton City. We know it’s old school, but there’s a reason movie days remain a family favourite – they’re just so much fun.

Movies at Ster Kinekor in December that your kids might enjoy are:

  • Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
  • Disney’s Strange World
  • Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile
  • Tad the Lost Explorer and the Emerald Tablet
  • Big Trip 2: Special Delivery
  • DC League of Pets
  • Minions: The Rise of Gru
  • Just don’t forget to pre-book tickets because highly anticipated releases often sell out!
  1. Have A Picnic in A Park

Sandton Central boasts many well-maintained, safe parks that offer small sanctuaries of green in the heart of the city. These little grassy spots are the perfect oasis to take the family for a day of outdoor play, relaxing in the sun, sharing treats on a picnic blanket and exploring nature. Who doesn’t love finding an exciting bug?

An underrated gem is Mushroom Farm Park, which got its name because it used to be – you guessed it – a mushroom farm. It’s got a well-equipped play area, an outdoor gym, and even the Truffles on the Park restaurant, so you can relax with an icy cocktail while your little ones frolic.

  1. Go to The Theatre

Instilling a love for the arts in your children is essential to their growth as well-rounded individuals. Thankfully, that process can be a whole lot of fun for the entire family! Forget stuffy, long-winded theatre – kids’ plays are colourful, interactive, educational and entertaining. Let your children experience the magic of live performance when they attend a children’s show at Sandton City’s Auto and General Theatre on the Square. You can check out their upcoming attractions on their Instagram page to see when their next little-one-focused show is on.

  1. Find A Fantastic Book

When last did you visit a library? It’s about time to go to one again! The Sandton Library at Nelson Mandela Square is open to all members of the community, and for just a small fee, you and your little ones have thousands of fantastic books to borrow. Show your tots the magic of the written word for a fraction of the cost of buying books, and you might just create a bookworm. Reading is the doorway to infinite worlds of imagination and the Sandton Library is the key. Unlock adventure this December break!

  1. For the Ultimate Splurge: Plan A City Sleepover!

For your little prince or princess, the sky is the limit. So why not treat them to a once-in-a-lifetime sleepover at one of Sandton Central’s fantastic hotels? By making an event of it, you’re giving them memories that will last a lifetime, and treating yourself, too. We know this might seem a little over the top, but special experiences are priceless and the look of delight you’ll see when they realise what room service is, might just be worth all the money in the world. Just don’t let the kids discover the mini-fridge! Take a look at the hotels in our area here.

Sandton Central is a place of entertainment for the whole family, whether you’re opting for breezy outdoor picnics, browsing for books or spending that little bit extra on an evening of total wonder. We know it’s fantastic to be with family, but also to keep them occupied in healthy, interesting ways. That’s why Sandton Central has created a community where that’s possible. Bring the family to Sandton Central this festive season – we guarantee fun!
