MARKET ON THE SQUARE
03 June 2018

Spend your Sundays on The Square with Nelson Mandela Square’s artisanal market.

Nelson Mandela Square have put their own twist on the traditional Italian market with Market on The Square – a lovely little village market in the heart of Sandton.

With Nelson Mandela Square as an ideal and iconic backdrop for an artisanal Sunday market, Market on The Square embraces the classic notion of ‘the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker’. Quality artisans have been handpicked to serve their homemade specialties. While priding themselves in their production and presentation processes – the artisans are sure to take visitors on an appetizing journey from the creation, to the consumption, of their gourmet foods.

Market on The Square is a first of its kind in South Africa and lends itself as yet another exclusive concept, tailored to the Nelson Mandela Square, and its adjacent, Sandton City clientele. The market steps away from the well-known farmer and flea markets across South Africa and moves towards a communal feel, whereby all vendors don the same uniform and colour-tones in keeping with Nelson Mandela Square’s sophisticated essence in embodying a collective community of artisans, much the same as in Europe.

Market on The Square, will continuously be introducing new gourmet food offerings on Sundays, in line with bringing unique experiences to our shoppers, and the Sandton node. The market completes the illustrious shopping experience that Nelson Mandela Square offers – from world class restaurants, to trendy fashion boutiques, and everything in between.

In launching Market on The Square, Jonathan Sinden, Chief Operations Officer of Liberty Two Degrees explains:

“As co-owners of Nelson Mandela Square, it is always a pleasure for us to get the opportunity to announce a new customer experience within one of the malls in our retail portfolio. Market on The Square is a particularly exciting and unique concept to be launching, as it complements the existing European ‘piazza’ styled atmosphere within Nelson Mandela Square and offers an all encompassed artisanal experience alongside the distinctive cuisines, flavours, and ambiance, of our restaurateurs on Nelson Mandela Square.”

In truly representing the artisanal nature of traditional European markets, Nelson Mandela Square collaborated with the best market and landscape architect in the business, the man who brought you Fourways Farmers Market, Greg Straw.

Commenting on the vision for Market on The Square, Greg Straw elaborates:

“The intention for Market on The Square was to bring an urban equivalent of the ‘farmers’ market’ to Nelson Mandela Square and ultimately, to Sandton. Market on The Square was inspired by the emblematic, handcrafted, Italian mercato or ‘street market’. It was to create and curate a space for an artisanal collection of producers, makers, and creators, to sell their passion in a sophisticated and beautiful setting”.

Be sure to have your European artisanal market experience under the African sky with Nelson Mandela Square, where entertainment, and an array of handcrafted delicacies await you at this exciting, contemporary market which features live music and hand-picked stalls trading in artisanal products, gourmet street food, and craft beverages.

Visit Market on The Square where unique artisans have your starters, mains, and deserts covered. Sundays from 8am – 3pm.
