Happy #FriendshipDay, Sandton Central!

30 July, it’s International Day of Friendship! You’d probably ask, ‘Why is this important?’. Well, this day marks the importance of friendships and friends in promoting peace in various cultures across the globe. It’s also known as World Friendship Day or just Friendship Day.

So grab your phone, call your friends, invite them to the heart of Sandton and show your appreciation for one another by reminding them why they are your best buds. There are alternative ways too – send a card with flowers, shoot a WhatsApp message, create a photo collage on Facebook, or just drop by, even if it’s unexpectedly (they’ll appreciate the check-in)… There is a way for everyone to honour their besties!

Friendship Day History

Back in 1919, this day was intended for people to celebrate their friendship by sending each other cards, but the market had dried up in 1940, and it completely died out. Luckily in 1998, Winnie the Pooh was named the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations and in 2011, the 30th July was officially recognised as International Friendship Day.

Today, with social media, we are more connected than ever before. Everyone can get involved no matter where they are in the world to “observe this day in an appropriate manner, in accordance with the culture and other appropriate circumstances or customs of their local, national and regional communities, including through education and public awareness-raising activities.”

The power of friendship is an international one that reaches out to all corners and cultures of the globe. So let’s celebrate it in Sandton Central!

Celebrate Friendship Day in Sandton Central

Every friendship is unique, whether tried and tested or new and burgeoning. The best thing about it is that there are no set of rules, which gives you and your mates a blank slate to do whatever you want and, of course, within reason… Therefore, we encourage you to honour your memories together and make new ones.

Take a trip to Sandton’s facilities together and visit the spots that mean something to you, whether it’s lifestyle spots, restaurants, accommodation destinations, parks, or arts and culture. Here’s a tip to make it easy – go to the one place where you promised each other you’d always go.

We grasp the fact that life is busy, and not everyone can plan a big day out with friends. Perhaps think about a voucher from a particular store to spoil them so they won’t be disappointed if there’s no colossal celebration in their honour, which they can use to celebrate your friendship on another day… Maybe you’ll get to spend the day together next year?!

Check in on long-lost friends with a phone call; it might end up in hours-long conversations about life – secrets that aren’t spilt on social media. Even if you are in regular contact, learn more about what they had for lunch, or better yet, recommend your favourite eatery.

However you decide to spend this Friday, take the chance to let all your besties know how much you care for and appreciate them. It’s the chance to reach out to old friends, new friends, and even those you see every day of the week, and do something that celebrates what your friendship means to you.

Happy Friendship Day, Sandton!
