THEATRE ON THE SQUARE
You might not know this, in which case this will serve as public service announcement, but right in the heart of Nelson Mandela Square lies a little hall known as the Auto & General Theatre on the Square.
Nestled between The Butcher Shop & Grill and the Sandton Library, it’s much more than just a theatre. Dreams are made here, cultures get adopted, great times are had, and life-long memories are formed. Whether that be as a spectator or an entertainer.
The theatre has been the host to many great productions, concerts, or shows throughout its 22-year long history. Over 2500 to be (more) specific. Not only has it provided the infrastructure and exposure to scores of actors, writers, and the like, but it has also been fundamental in the development of a wealth of South African creative talent, thanks to the continuous support of Auto & General.
Anyway, that’s enough history for one day. The Theatre on the Square is renowned for producing and showcasing the highest quality productions and shows and this October is no different.
Above and beyond the Lunch Hour Classical Concerts that take place every Friday, two headlining productions will also be taking stage throughout the month. The first being funny man Jason Goliath’s second one-man show, called Manstruation – Surviving a Wife, will take place during the first half of October. The thought-provoking yet hilarious show makes light of the often-uncomfortable truths of the various stages in relationship-life. Although the show is meant to entertain first and foremost, Jason wants his audience to re-assess their current situation, whatever that might be.
About the act, the man himself explains: “After leaving my show, I want people to better understand their situation and start thinking about what they want, where they are going. I want people in amazing relationships to “get out of their own way”, more often we take things too seriously, we have become too sensitive, we overanalyse and have become so selfish. My show offers a deeper understanding and a solution in the way I know best – [by being] funny”.
You can catch Manstruation – Surviving a Wife between the 1 and 12 October at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square.
The second production for this month, and back by popular demand, is the much acclaimed Fawlty Flowers. The production stars the remarkable comedian Annie Robinson and accomplished actor, Mark Mulder and is based on the hugely popular ‘70s series, Fawlty Towers – it’s worth noting that it was voted the best British TV series of all time.
The modern reincarnation on stage tips its hat to the original while ensuring its own originality, making it a must-watch for die-hard fans and strangers to the series alike.
Fawlty Flowers takes the Theatre on the Square stage between the 15 and 26 October.
Tickets for both shows can be booked online HERE.
