Sandton Central invites you to Alto234 from now until 27 February 2022! The what now?! You may ask… Well, the highest urban bar in Africa combined with a journey through The Leonardo Art. Let’s rephrase – Come and join us for The Leonardo Art Experience that has been married to African design elements. Yes, an art tour, indeed!
What is it that you’ll be viewing exactly? Hmmm, be ready to see the finer details from glowing hand-carved plastered walls, an impressive recycled, melted plastic intricate collage, to a masterpiece set into reflective black granite with a collection of gold leaf embellished animal bones. The result is locally commissioned, site-specific artworks that are bold statements and stories woven together of our forefathers’ journey…
The R500 per person package from Tuesdays to Sundays includes a tour of the art through Leonardo, a glass of Moët & Chandon and entrance to Alto234. There’s, of course, the option if you don’t want to experience both, but only one. Then only pay R200 for the tour or R300 for Alto234, but remember, pre-booking is essential, and full payment is required 48 hours prior.
We suggest having a cold one at the bar and perhaps grabbing a bite at AURUM Restaurant after the tour, at an additional charge, needless to say. Secure your spot now, before it’s too late!
If you decided that the art tour is, without a doubt one, of many you won’t be missing this year, then you’d better soak up these 5 ways to identify a good piece of artwork (that’s if you don’t know already).
5 Top Tips To Tell If A Piece of Artwork Is Of Good Quality
- Beauty: Instinctive and natural, you’ll be the judge of whether a work of art is beautiful or not. ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’… You won’t necessarily decide consciously; you’ll just automatically be captivated by shapes, patterns and symmetries or colours, textures and compositions. There are also other aspects such as movement or flow, figures and objects, and the presentation and framing. Don’t overthink it; the only question you need to answer is ‘Do I like it?’.
- Skill: This one is easy; compare a piece of work with others, and you’ll soon determine whether it was skillfully created, such as paintings. Is the artist consistent with all their paintings? Are there odd markings when compared? Some artwork may seem rushed but could be intentionally, as long as it’s internally cohesive.
- Inherent Meaning: Just as with music, is any art powerful – emotional, political or challenging preconceived ideas. Yes, not all art… a bowl of grapes is a bowl of grapes, and unless it’s not transformed into wine, it’s just a traditional still life. Take the time and see if you can find the meaning or emotion in it.
- Uniqueness: This usually has to do with the how – the artist uses new subjects or old subjects in a new Study a piece for some time and try and figure out what’s different – sometimes it jumps at you, other times not so much.
- Fulfilled Intent: This is the most important – to figure out what the artist is trying to say. But it’s really not a state secret. Just read the artist statement – the artwork should accurately portray a subject or express emotion and deepen and strengthen the viewer’s understanding. And if you don’t understand, just enjoy the art and don’t worry about it.
