Lights, Camera, Action: Sandton Central Transforms into a Hub for the Arts

Welcome, art enthusiasts and cinephiles! February in Sandton Central is not just about the balmy summer days but also about celebrating the vibrant and pulsating heart of the arts. This year, as the sun sets on the bustling streets, the glittering lights of the Theatre on the Square and the sound of networking buzz emanating from The Sandton Convention Centre beckon us to an extraordinary journey of storytelling and cinematic brilliance. Let’s dive into the allure of the Joburg Film Festival and the captivating theatre productions that await us in this cultural haven.

The Joburg Film Festival: A Spectacle of African and International Cinema

From 26 February to 3 March, the Sandton Convention Centre transforms into the epicentre of the Joburg Film Festival (JFF), Africa’s premier film festival. Now in its sixth year, JFF, presented by MultiChoice, has matured into an independent platform that not only showcases OUR stories but celebrates and rewards excellence in film. As South Africa marks 30 years of democracy, the 2024 festival is themed “INSPIRING STORYTELLERS” and “CELEBRATING LEGENDS” both behind and in front of the camera.

This festival is more than just a viewing experience. It’s a crucible of innovation, excellence, and purposeful creativity. JFF aims to enhance cultural tourism in Joburg, Gauteng, and South Africa at large. With a meticulously curated selection of 60 films from Africa, the diaspora, and around the world, the Film Programme is a testament to the tireless efforts of its organisers.

But that’s not all. The Industry Programme, a critical festival component, runs alongside the film screenings. This includes a film market, vital for content creators, producers, and buyers. It’s a dynamic world of filmmaking, and JFF serves as a pivotal platform for knowledge sharing and networking.

The Joburg Exchange: Bridging the Gap in the Film Industry

A highlight of the festival is the JOBURG EXCHANGE (JBX), a fresh and innovative industry market focusing on the business of film and television. This 3-day event, from 28 February to 1 March at the Sandton Convention Centre, is a hub for over 500 participants from various media and entertainment sectors. It’s where deals are made, connections are forged, and knowledge is transferred.

Theatre on the Square: The Cultural Jewel of Nelson Mandela Square

As we immerse ourselves in the filmic world of the Joburg Film Festival, let’s not forget the beating heart of Sandton’s arts scene – the Theatre on the Square. Nestled in the iconic Nelson Mandela Square, this theatre is not just a venue; it’s a vibrant cultural gem that has been the soul of the community since its inception in 1994.

Celebrating almost 30 years of artistic excellence, the Theatre on the Square has become synonymous with engaging and challenging productions. From local and international plays to musicals, comedies, youth theatre, and classical lunch-hour concerts, this theatre offers a diverse range of experiences. It’s a place where South Africa’s finest artists and musicians have graced the stage, making it a revered destination for both the public and the theatre industry.

This February, the theatre becomes an integral part of the Joburg Film Festival, hosting many of the acclaimed films set to be shown. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Let’s explore the must-see productions that will be captivating audiences at the Theatre on the Square this month.

BLOKE & HIS AMERICAN BANTU: A Story of Friendship and Solidarity

Kicking off the theatre’s February lineup is “BLOKE & HIS AMERICAN BANTU,” running from 30 January to 10 February. This thought-provoking play, written by Dr. Siphiwo Mahala, directed by Jefferson Tshabalala, and featuring leading actors Sello Maake KaNcube and Denim Richards, is a tribute to Black History Month.

Set in the 1960s, it explores the profound friendship between two influential intellectuals, Bloke Modisane from Sophiatown and Langston Hughes from Harlem. Their connection, maintained through phone calls and letters from 1960 to 1967, highlights the critical role of artists and intellectuals in fostering global solidarity during a challenging period in South Africa’s history. The play delves into themes of nostalgia, resilience of dreams, and the African American pursuit of reclaiming black identity.

Spanish Steps: A Dance of Life and Laughter

Next in the lineup is “Spanish Steps,” showing on 13 February. This ‘coming-of-middle-age’ comedy drama, written by Gavin Werner and directed by Caroline Midgley, promises to be an unforgettable experience. It’s a story of two unlikely companions, Maureen, a corporate executive, and Barry, her underachieving employee, who find themselves trapped in a basement. Their interactions, full of humour and heart, reflect the complexities of human relationships and the journey to self-discovery.
