Cheeseburger Day: Find Your Happy Place in Sandton

Cheeseburger Day: Find Your Happy Place in Sandton

Never fear; Sandton Central has burgers and beers! Let go of the soups and the stews; it’s time to sink your teeth into juicy, tender cheeseburgers when you celebrate Cheeseburger Day with us on Sunday, 18 September 2022! We don’t care if it’s at home, with family and friends or in town; we just don’t want you to miss out.

Cheeseburger Day: where it all started

The cheeseburger was born when Lionel Sternberger, a Californian teenager, decided to put a slice of cheese on a burger one day in 1924, and because it was so tasty, he shared it with his dad, who loved it so much he sold it in his sandwich shop.

However, the first actual sandwich marketed using the word ‘cheeseburger’ was in Kentucky, 1934. A year after that, the term was trademarked in Denver, Colorado. That said, there’s no doubt that the Americans can take credit for the invention of the cheeseburger.

Cheeseburger Day can be celebrated and enjoyed in many ways. We’re explaining how you can make cheeseburgers at home, host a cheeseburger party, or try some crazy yet delicious cheeseburgers at Sandton’s restaurants. We’ll even add some cheeseburger songs for some extra fun.

Cheeseburgers at home

Let those creativity and culinary skills sizzle into different variations of a traditional cheeseburger! There are numerous substitutes for meats, cheese, and garnishes. Here are a couple of ideas:

  • Pizza Cheeseburger: Pizza or burger? Life’s too short for confusing choices. A pizza burger is a perfect combo and so much fun that you’ll want to make them every night of the week. Recipe.
  • Greek-inspired Salmon Cheeseburger: Skinless salmon fillet pureed with an egg served with cucumber, tomatoes, and a sauce containing Greek yoghurt and crumbled feta served in a pita. This is a party in the mouth! Recipe.
  • Noodle Cheeseburgers: Instant noodles and burgers are two of our ultimate nostalgic cravings. Fry the noodles into bun-sized discs to create an irresistibly crunchy alternative to a usual, fluffy bun. Recipe.

Host a cheeseburger party

Host a cheeseburger party if you have company this weekend and you’ve run out of food ideas to feed your guests other than the standard bring-and-braai or potjie! Let everyone make their own burgers.

They can choose their toppings, and you don’t have to worry about feeding them something they might not eat. A toppings bar is your only concern; provide a selection of cheeses, tomato slices, lettuce, pickles, mayonnaise, sauces, or anything else that goes deliciously on top of a burger.

It’s also very pleasing for everyone to stand around the braai, having conversations while the different meat patties are flipped over. So, there’s no need for additional entertainment, except for these cheeseburger songs –

  • Cheeseburger in Paradise by Jimmy Buffett (1978)
  • His Cheeseburger by Veggie Tales (2011)
  • The Cheeseburger Family by Jack Stauber’s Micropop (2018)
  • The Cheeseburger Song by Lucinnio (2020)
