Movember & Men\u2019s Health: It\u2019s Time for the Moustache.<\/p>\n

From Eddie Murphy to Salvador Dali and Martin Luther King to Freddy Mercury, moustaches have often been a gentleman\u2019s signature. And now they\u2019ve come to represent men\u2019s health issues.<\/p>\n

Movember is that all-important unofficially named month where men take stock of their health. It\u2019s about issues, specifically, such as testicular and prostate cancer.<\/p>\n

Sadly, various forms of cancers affect people younger and younger than in many years past. Causes? Unknown as yet, though some suspect it has to do with increased cellular tower activity (and indeed there does seem to be a case in how living in close proximity to a cellular tower increases risk).<\/p>\n

Regardless, the celebration and awareness of men\u2019s health are represented by a man growing a \u2018stache (women are welcome to join in simply by snipping a bit of their hair and glueing it to their upper lip).<\/p>\n

A gent is welcome to visit the myriad of hairstylists at Sandton City \u2013 an essential part of our Sandton Central district.<\/p>\n

There are various styles of moustaches he may decide to try. Here are our suggestions:<\/p>\n

The Horseshoe.<\/strong>
\nHorseshoes are like rabbit\u2019s feet, they\u2019re regarded as being lucky (not so much for the poor bunny, if you only take one foot, he\u2019ll be hopping in circles). So perhaps you\u2019d like some of that luck yourself. They\u2019re easy to grow as well\u2026 simply grow a goatee, without the chin part!<\/p>\n

\"MovemberThe Handlebar.<\/strong>
\nFancy yourself as a bit of a drinks mixer? Good at serving draughts of beer? Make an excellent listener to people about their life issues? Then you have what it takes to grow a handlebar moustache.
\nA favourite of bartenders everywhere (in the 1880s), it has the good ol\u2019 Western vibe about it. It\u2019s good for those who like duels at high noon, too. One (permanent) way to solve differences in the office.
\n\"Movember
\nPencil moustache<\/strong>
\nSo called because it genuinely resembles a pencil in width. Made famous by one Gomez Addams \u2013 the patriarch of the Addams family \u2013 it is easy to sculpture and has a finesse about it that also makes it popular with swashbuckling swordsmen like the folklore heroes of Hollywood yesteryear. Think Robin Hood: Men in Tights or Wesley from The Princess Bride. It can be creepy or dashing depending on who\u2019s wearing it. If you\u2019re more the Addams type, rather grow something else.<\/p>\n

\"Movember<\/p>\n

The Walrus<\/strong>
\nSo named because it resembles a certain aquatic mammal\u2019s facial features (the clue\u2019s in the name). It is popular with men who want to appear larger than life \u2013 or simply want extra presence in a room.<\/p>\n

Or perhaps it\u2019s for the man who is into the environment and protecting our marine life and shows solidarity not just with men\u2019s health but the health of our animals too.<\/p>\n

\"Movember
\nThe Chevron (a.k.a the Magnum P.I.)<\/strong>
\nNow this is a \u2018stache for the ages! Made famous by Tom Selleck (above) when he played the main lead in Magnum P.I., it is a bold moustache that states its masculinity in a noble, badge-of-honour kind of way.<\/p>\n

When you wear this moustache, if you can pull it off, you are not only showing ardent support for men\u2019s health, but also displaying your sexiness for all to see.<\/p>\n

Freddy Mercury also wore one later in his career, which helped make it iconic.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re suave and you know it, wear it with pride.<\/p>\n

\"Movember
\nThe Fu Manchu<\/strong>
\nDo you have ambitions of world domination? Full of evil plots? Like ingenious and overly complicated devices in order to destroy heroes that have some escapable flaw? But still, you know, care about men\u2019s health?<\/p>\n

Grow a Fu Manchu. So-named after the villainous character, it was also popular with the Mongols (and they certainly achieved a lot \u2013 like conquering more territory than any other people ever in the history of the world).<\/p>\n

\"Movember<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re into taking on imperial secret agents or simply conquering half the known world, try one of these on for size.<\/p>\n

Whatever moustache you decide to wear, wear it proudly. Because you\u2019re showing you care about men\u2019s health. And continue to do so by joining a group dedicated to men\u2019s health and \/ or contributing to a related health fund.<\/p>\n

In addition, Sandton Central is having its own Movember celebtration:<\/strong><\/p>\n

And this November, sorry, Movember \u2013 from 16 October to 29 November<\/strong>, to be precise \u2013 Sandton Central is delighted to have roving photographer and Instagrammer Alexi Portokallis<\/a> prowling the district with his camera, snapping gents \u2013 and perhaps the occasional passing bearded lady \u2013 with impressive upper-lip adornment, in search of Mr Movember Sandton Central.<\/p>\n

Yes, it\u2019s time to grow your mo, your bead or any other facial whiskers you are able to cultivate.<\/p>\n

Sandton\u2019s most marvellously moustachioed chaps stand the chance of winning R2,500<\/strong> cash, and being declared proud caretaker of the moustache to crown all moustaches. However, you don\u2019t need to be Einstein \u2013 or to wear his moustache \u2013 to realise that they\u2019ll also be supporting the life-saving Movember men\u2019s health initiative, with its particular focus on prostate cancer awareness.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know very well that here in Sandton we\u2019re surrounded by the cream of the country\u2019s innovators and big thinkers. Now we\u2019re hoping to be amazed by their creativity, whatever their particular brand of mo magic, and even to have a giggle,\u201d says Elaine Jack, City Improvement District Manager of Sandton Central Management District<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut on the serious side, we\u2019re truly hoping to make a difference to men\u2019s health, increasing not only awareness of both prostate cancer and male suicide, but also encouraging vital donations to the Movember campaign,\u201d notes Jack.<\/p>\n

Alexi will be taking mo-photos on the streets and in the malls of Sandton Central, but should a fledgling Freddie Mercury or a carefully curated Charlie Chaplin wish to flag their support and ensure their entry to the competition, then images can be sent via social media \u2013 on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram \u2013 tagging #SandtonCentral.<\/p>\n

For some tash inspiration, facial topiary both famous and infamous on an international scale includes that of: Idris Elba, Hulk Hogan, Richard Pryor, Nick Cannon, Bradley Cooper, David Beckham, Roman emperor Hadrian, Frank Zappa, Hercule Poirot, and \u201canchorman\u201d Ron Burgundy.<\/p>\n

As for the most celebrated local lip warmers, well, that\u2019s up to you.<\/p>\n

While Sandton Central\u2019s stash snap is all about fun, it\u2019s also a reminder that men should visit their general practitioner for a prostate health check-up or make an appointment at one of several medical facilities in the area, including: Sandown Clinic, the Medical Suites at Sandton City, and Morningside Clinic.<\/p>\n

Possible early warning signs of prostate cancer include:
\n\u2022 Burning or pain during urination.
\n\u2022 Difficulty urinating, or trouble starting and stopping.
\n\u2022 More frequent urges to urinate at night.
\n\u2022 Loss of bladder control.
\n\u2022 Decreased flow or velocity of urine stream.
\n\u2022 Blood in urine.
\n\u2022 Blood in semen.
\n\u2022 Erectile dysfunction.
\n\u2022 Painful ejaculation.<\/p>\n
