2021 was the year of the \u2018Great Resignation\u2019<\/em> – a year when workers quit their jobs at historic rates primarily due to employees feeling disrespected and experiencing unethical behaviour where organisations failed to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.<\/p>\n

Even though<\/em> many thought it would eventually calm down, it\u2019s expected not to go away anytime<\/em> soon. We mean, most probably even you<\/em> can identify a few individuals quitting their current jobs and starting a new one soon, or<\/em> are in the process of doing so at least.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a positive development because people feel less<\/em> compelled to remain stuck in a dead-end job paying peanuts<\/em>, where the management micro-manages every<\/em> individual like they\u2019re in kindergarten and being treated harshly or<\/em> undermined.<\/p>\n

Obviously, like in any other circumstance, before the global pandemic, there are a few things you need to think<\/em> about before moving, including<\/em> how to prepare for a new job – mentally, physically, and spiritually.<\/p>\n

Things To Consider Before Moving<\/strong><\/h3>\n

  • Are you just burned out?<\/strong> If you\u2019ve been with a company for two years or more, and you feel tired, practice self-care and take a few days off to see how you feel. This way, you may feel that the job is fine<\/em>, and you just need some time away from the office, or<\/em> you may elect to leave as you realise the job isn\u2019t for you.<\/li>\n
  • Do you experience a sense of fulfilment?<\/strong> Covid-19 has left many of us seeing loved ones sick and realising that our prestigious jobs are unfulfilling. If you feel that you need a job with greater<\/em> purpose and meaning, something that makes the world a better place and seems more important than a monthly paycheck, you\u2019re probably<\/em> one of the folks who need to change jobs or careers\u2026<\/li>\n
  • Are you exposed to challenging growth?<\/strong> You might have a fantastic<\/em> boss, but it\u2019s best to have a convo with your superior if it lacks challenging work and future growth. Ask questions about new possible responsibilities and their planned future for you within the company. From the answers received, you\u2019ll get a clear idea of whether<\/em> to move on or not.<\/li>\n
  • Are you surrounded by intelligent, positive people?<\/strong> If every day at the office is long and tedious, and you find yourself daydreaming, scrolling on social media, and distracting others, it\u2019s a warning sign. You know what you have to do next if you don\u2019t feel encouraged, considered an integral part of the team.<\/li>\n
  • Are your basic needs addressed? <\/strong>Are you happy? Are you appreciated? Is the pay fair? Do you have a sense of purpose? Do you have options for career growth? Are there better opportunities? Does the company offer remote, hybrid and flexible work schedules? Do you feel disconnected from the rest? These types of questions will help you determine to stay or to go.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    How To Prepare For A New Job<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Prepare for the transition: <\/strong>Take a break, reset, and shift<\/em> your mindset. It enables you to disconnect from your past life, centre yourself and concentrate in the new position – to bring your new best<\/em> to the table!<\/li>\n
    • Learn by doing your homework:<\/strong> First impressions start long<\/em> before you get your badge or attend onboarding. Google the people you\u2019ll be working with as well as the company and ask if there\u2019s anything you need to prepare for your first day. Express gratitude towards those who interviewed you, but also stay connected with the people from your previous role. Invest a lot of time and energy to perform well and succeed in your SMART goals.<\/li>\n
    • Build relationships: <\/strong>That\u2019s what business is all about!<\/em> Step out of your comfort zone, get to know as many people as possible, and eat lunch with them. You never know who might be your new best friend or another valuable<\/em> connection on LinkedIn\u2026<\/li>\n
    • Back your visibility and value through contributions: <\/strong>Know your<\/em> brand and deliver on your promise. Always search for opportunities to shine<\/em> and build your capabilities. Get involved by demonstrating value, whether projects or the company\u2019s causes.<\/li>\n
    • Brand your mark: <\/strong>Acknowledge others, personalise your space and find<\/em> your voice. Show everyone that you are a team player by expressing praise and admiration for the great work you see in others. Personalise your space, if possible, to \u2018tell\u2019 people who<\/em> you are – showcase your strengths, passions and values and find creative ways to surround yourself with them. Develop your voice<\/em> among the communication style of those around you in every email, report, and roundtable discussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
