Sandton City’s Recycling Stations

Yes, it seems we are living in our new normal, but it doesn’t mean that our responsibility in protecting our planet should be abandoned. We get reminded daily that to care for ourselves, we must care for our environment. We urge every South African to recycle as the landfill capacity is fast becoming an impending crisis.

Sandton’s Recycling Stations at Sandton City are open for those of you currently recycling. In June, we supported the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) by donating R1 for every recycled item. We also set a target of reaching 5 000 recycled items, but this doesn’t mean we have to stop there…let’s double the amount this month and create a renewed tomorrow together.

Recycle your already-separated paper, plastic, glass and cans at the drop off when you’re on your way shopping or when you’re done. You don’t have to go shopping when dropping your recyclables, but if you are, keep in mind to purchase reusable shopping bags instead of plastic ones, we all know where it ends up…

Join the movement

As we didn’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, but borrowing it from our children, we should put people and our environment first, by joining the movement with recycling initiatives at home, joining the conversation on social platforms and sharing information with friends and family. Or we could shop from or donate to the WWF for them to continue their conservation efforts sufficiently. We know you want to choose all of the above, and that makes us happy! 😉

Recycling and reusing should be part of our daily lives to ensure there are enough resources for future generations’ needs in a clean environment. Reusing is merely using old products repeatedly where recycling is using core elements for manufacturing new goods such as plastic water bottles, cans, batteries, and packaging pallets.

It saves energy and money, reduces air and water pollution, creates jobs, protects our envronment (wildlife, forests, and wetlands), preserves natural resources, and frees up our disposable sites. There are mainly three stages in the recycling process, and it all starts and ends with us – the consumers. Stage one where we provide the materials to get collected and sorted according to types and uses. The second where it gets processed into new materials, and the third stage where recycled products are sold to serve its new purpose.

Recyclable and non-recyclable waste:

Around half of what goes into your bin could actually be recycled and not end up in landfills. We simply must turn recycling into a positive lifestyle change that can quickly be adopted in any household. To produce less waste, we need to grow accustomed to purchasing products with minimal packaging, that are recyclable or biodegradable.

Here are lists of items you can recycle at our Recycling Stations as well as a list of non-recyclable items that will result in contamination:

All products must be dry, free of dirt and have a valid and clear barcode.

Recyclable items:
* Aluminium Cans
* Steel Cans
* All #1 – PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
* Certain #2 – HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
* Certain #5 – PP (Polypropylene)
* Glass bottles

Non-recyclable items:
* Used Oil cans
* Cans or bottles that contain hazardous liquids
* Containers with liquid, containers must be empty
* Coffee Cups
* Polystyrene
