Our Top 7 South African Podcasts About Entrepreneurship
08 July 2020

  • Podcasting is booming and creators are making bank.

  • In South Africa, approximately 43% of the online population has listened to a podcast in the past month.

  • Podcasts by entrepreneurs are particularly relatable because they've walked the talk.

  • This is one addiction we’re endorsing - listen away, fam.

The global podcasting scene is booming. There are currently just over 1,000,000 podcasts being broadcast online. This is up from over half a million in 2018, and the number is guaranteed to keep growing as even more businesses move to the online space in light of the pandemic.

According to the Reuters’ Digital News Report 2020, “the underlying picture is one of growth. Our data show an overall rise in podcast listening to 31% (+3) across a basket of 20 countries we have been tracking since 2018. Almost four in ten access monthly in Spain (41%), Ireland (40%), Sweden (36%), Norway (36%), and the United States (36%). By contrast usage in the Netherlands (26%), Germany (24%), and the UK (22%) is nearer to a quarter.”

There’s a good reason for the boom too. For one, podcasts are a great money turner. According to an IAB Podcast Ad Revenue Report, podcast advertising revenue in the US market alone is expected to pass $1 billion by 2021. Podcasts are listened to in over half of America’s homes so this is hardly surprising. Back home, 55 % of us have access to the internet and 43% of that online population have listened to a podcast in the last month. These numbers make advertisers very happy indeed. Additionally, the Reuters report has also noted a growing willingness for people to pay for podcasts, which makes them a very viable market.

As far as entrepreneurs are concerned, it’s as though podcasts were created with them in mind.
The 2019 Annual Heavy Chef Entrepreneur Education Survey revealed that entrepreneurs learn whenever they can. So, really, what else can a person who is always busy and on the move, but still has the hunger to learn and grow, do? Listen to podcasts of course.

More so, podcasts are not just for entrepreneurs, they are by entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs are taking to podcast platforms to create new channels for communicating with their customers and supporters. They are using these platforms to share their own experiences in business, and life, and encouraging other entrepreneurs to go for their own dreams in the process.

We don’t know about you but there is definitely something reassuring about getting information about entrepreneurship from an entrepreneur - someone who knows your struggle and can speak your language. This is our top 10 list of South African podcasts about entrepreneurship - happy listening!
