Capture your moment in time with Nelson Mandela Square’s newest architectural wonder – one of the largest Tower Clocks in the Southern Hemisphere
26 March 2021

Nelson Mandela Square has just announced the latest architectural wonder to grace its space; one of the largest tower clocks in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Square is one of the most iconic lifestyle destinations in the country, exemplifying world-class sophistication, European-inspired architecture, and tourist-centric representations of the life and times of South African hero, Nelson Mandela.

The Square was developed in 1994, and has since continued to enhance not only its retail and dining offering, but also its physical space to provide visitors with an unparalleled environment of beauty and serenity through which to indulge.

The latest addition to Nelson Mandela Square is a monumental clock comprising of diamond hour pieces, translucent numerals with satin black and gold finishes, and LED lighting to create a unique halo while illuminating the clock at night. This clock is 5.75-metres in diameter, and weighs over 500 kilograms.

As grand as its size and appearance, the construction of this timepiece was equally as impressive. The Nelson Mandela Square clock took 240-hours to design, and 4 months to construct. Most of the elements for the clock were fabricated from aluminium, including 47-metres of aluminium welding. Twenty metres of LED strip lighting was used for the lighting of the clock hands and the halo illumination alone.

The clock is situated directly behind the Nelson Mandela statue, overlooking the Square, and is a welcome addition to the space, complementing its nature of sophistication, and delighting visitors with its ambient lighting and delicate chimes.

Come to The City, and capture your moment in time.
