Bookmark these dates! Friends of Sandton Library’s month-end Grand Book Sale is a must for book lovers
24 October 2018

There are only two chances left this year to get great book titles for R20 each from Friends of the Sandton Library’s Grand Books Sales.

Be sure to get to 2018’s final sales on October 26 and 27 and November 23 and 24 at Sandton Library, Nelson Mandela Square, and Sandton Central. With roughly 2,000 books at each sale, you’re certain to find your perfect summer read.

Almost all books can be snapped up for R20, with a few exceptions in the collectors’ corner where more valuable books are individually priced, but still brilliant bargains.

The popular fiction section features best-selling authors with tables of writers to choose from. Non-fiction books are categorised into topics from business to cookery, hobbies and more.

The sale is a firm favourite with the public from Sandton Central and surrounds, and across the Gauteng province. Around 600 books are sold each month with recent fiction being the fastest mover.

Friends of the Sandton Library is a community organisation run entirely by volunteers. It has been selling books to supplement the library since 2004. Money raised is spent on the library, especially buying new books. They also supply special plastic covers for new books to extend their lifecycles.

Donated books received in unsellable condition, or those that sit on sale tables for three months, are donated to T.L.C. The Love of Christ’s Children’s Home and Fred Norman Secondary School in Ennerdale.

At Fred Norman School, located in a poor community faced with many social and literacy issues, the books are being used in creating a new reading centre, providing learners with invaluable reading material in a fun, safe space to read and study.

Friends of Sandton Library also offer a valuable service for people who are moving house or simply cleaning out. Because they rely on the public donations for their sales, they collect boxes of books from donor’s homes or accept them at Sandton Library. You can phone Sandton Library on 011 282 5911 to arrange transport.

If you have a bag of books to give, a Sandton Library Grand Book Sale is also the perfect opportunity to drop them off and, while you are there, perhaps buy a few too.
