Surgeon creates mobile spa service and the perfect way to uplift and spoil hospitalised family and friends

Hospital Spoils is a specialist mobile spa service created by Surgeon, Dr Claire Mitchell. It offers a range of in-hospital beauty treatments, allowing family and friends to gift their ailing loved ones with the treat of much-needed comfort and care, providing a unique alternative to the usual flowers and confectionary. “All too often I see patients in hospital feeling down with their family members looking on feeling helpless,” says Mitchell, “I’m often asked by these friends and family members how they can help aid their recovery. Hospital Spoils provides me the perfect response.”

In creating Hospital Spoils, Mitchell has provided a way to uplift the unwell, boost their wellbeing and alleviate the boredom of being bedridden for long stretches of times. What’s more, the presence of beauty therapists oftentimes serves to soften the cold and sterile hospital environment that patients find themselves in.
“Everyone knows that when you look good, you feel good,” continues Mitchell, “there is a huge psychological link between how you feel about yourself physically and the energy and positivity you emit. These feelings enhance recovery and motivate patients to get better.”

Mitchell has personally trained a selected group of therapists to be medically equipped to give the same professional treatments, but to patients who may be at their weakest and most vulnerable. Special attention is paid to sterility and infection control and each therapist is prepared to deal with certain medical conditions and intravenous drips, as well as to handle any possible emergencies that could occur. In addition, medical supervision and contact with a doctor on call is provided to ensure that every treatment given is safe and beneficial to the patient receiving it.

Manicures, pedicures, massages and even a gentle hair wash and blow dry given in the comfort and safety of one’s bed, are all on offer, allowing patients the opportunity to not only look and feel better, but also to experience the wonderfully healing power of touch. The relaxation afforded by this pampering has been found to be incredibly soothing and therapeutic for those in recovery.

Those gifting their loved ones can enjoy a treatment of their own at the same time, allowing for a lovely shared experience and adding a new dimension to visiting time. The service is also available to others within the hospital environment, including doctors, nurses and admin staff. What’s more, Hospital Spoils is not limited to merely visiting hospitals, but can also go to the homes of those newly discharged from the hospital or to those of the elderly or even to retirement homes.

At present the mobile spa is available to all hospitals, clinics and residences in Northern Johannesburg, but plans are in place to extend the service to the rest of the country and, in so doing, not only allowing the opportunity to be spoilt and pampered to every person in ill health, but also creating more necessary employment throughout South Africa.

As such Hospital Spoils is a project which not only serves to alleviate the suffering of the patients being treated, but also of those providing the treatments, making it one that should be supported by as many as possible.
