Auto & General on the Square temporarily suspend current productions
19 March 2020

Auto & General Theatre on the Square will take precautions and temporarily suspend current productions. However, there will be not be total shutdown!

In line with the Government’s response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its effective measures, the Auto & General Theatre on the Square will reschedule all productions until after the Easter Weekend or till further notice. The comedy shows postponed will include ARTIFICIALLY INFEMININATED with Claudine Ullman, SOBER SEX with Ntosh Madlingozi and PROBLEM CHILD with Loyiso Madinga.

However, following the ban on gatherings of 100 or more people, the theatre has elected to continue to operate small weekly matinee music concerts and rehearsals. Ticket sales for concerts will be limited to 60 selected and spaced seats per show in its 200-seater Sandton venue. Further communication will be distributed.

“While the health of everyone is paramount, we cannot allow the total collapse of the entertainment industry which will be hardest hit”, says executive producer Daphne Kuhn. The theatre must take cognizance of pleas of musicians and artists for work – and commitments to actors, directors, designers, playwrights, musicians, technicians and its resident staff who are most reliant on their income.

The theatre believes that it is vital that we keep spirits high with a sense of comfort through the positive medium of theatre, music and entertainment. We pride ourselves in being a home for many artists, story-tellers and musicians by continuously fueling the industry.

However, we have taken matters very seriously and we shall go the extra mile to ensure that our venue will be as safe, hygienic and as welcoming as ever.

In spite of the challenges, audiences can still look forward to an exciting and positive year ahead with new local and international plays, with new works by Mike van Graan and Paul Slabolepszy to name a few.
