Visit Sandton Library

Open to the public, the Sandton Library in Nelson Mandela Square is a wonderful haven of books and information to explore. Roam through the three floors of fiction, non-fiction, educational, historical books and so much more!

This public library in Sandton City offers a collection of over 92,000 books as well as audiobooks, videos, music CDs, and language tapes. One can also find the local daily and weekly newspapers to flip through as well periodicals and Provincial & Government Gazettes.

Sandton public library has separate sections for children, adults, references, and study. It has seating for almost 200 people to come and enjoy reading and learning.

Relax on the couches, get lost in a novel or make use of the computer and internet facilities.

Students and researchers are more than welcome to make use of the peaceful spots to spend the day working or studying. We offer quiet nooks, internet and printing facilities, perfect to plan, prepare and execute your projects.

Activities and services at Sandton Library

There is a children’s story hour every Saturday at 10 am. From toddlers up to 10-year-olds, we love to entertain the kids with fantastic stories that are appropriate and fun! This usually lasts around an hour, and we kindly ask that parents do not leave your children unattended.

For the chess lovers, the library offers chess sessions on Saturdays from 10 am. Come and test your strategy and learn new moves.

We do recommend phoning ahead to confirm these activities in case there are any changes.

The library receives four daily newspapers and four Sunday newspapers, and there are 12 computers with free internet access for the public to use at no cost, however, there is a charge for printing.

This is a public area, and we ask that you respect each other’s space. Avoid eating or drinking inside the library and most importantly, please respect the books. Some of these collections are old and precious, and when in doubt, please ask for assistance when looking for a specific book or topic.

Who can join the Sandton Library?

The Sandton Library is open to all members of the community; however, membership is necessary should you wish to borrow material. We encourage everyone to visit the library to explore the opportunities available and find solace in a space that is built around sharing knowledge and expanding one’s thinking.

How do I join the Sandton Library?

To become a member, you would need to fill out a form at the Sandton Library and take copies of your ID and proof of residency. There is an annual fee.

What documents do you need to apply for a library card?

You only need to bring a copy of your ID and proof of residency to apply for a library card.

Book sales at Sandton Library

Occasionally, we host book sales at Sandton Library. These are books that have been donated to the public library and not Sandton library stock. Our book sales are very affordable, and we usually have a wide variety of books to choose from. Keep a lookout on our social pages for upcoming events to view the next big book sale.

Sandton Library parking

There is free parking available at Nelson Mandela Square and the Sandton Gautrain station is also a short five-minute walk away for visitors coming outside of Sandton City.

Joburg Tourism Head Office

Within the Nelson Mandela Square community, we share the space with Joburg Tourism’s head office inside the Sandton Library. This move took place in 2016, as Sandton Central is a key business, tourist and events hub in South Africa and on the continent.

The Joburg Tourism offices are on the 4th floor of the Sandton Library building and houses its entire executive team and support staff.

Sandton Visitor Information Centre

Local visitors and international tourists, whether travelling for business or pleasure, are also more than welcome to stop by the Visitor Information Centre (VIC). The VIC is situated within the library.

The VIC at Nelson Mandela Square provides the following services:

  • Provide detailed information about the destination and surrounding areas, including free tourist maps and brochures.
  • Promote local surrounding tourism attractions, tourism products and experiences.
  • Links visitors with tourism business (tour operators, restaurants, hotels, experiences, shops etc.).
  • Assist visitors with bookings & reservations for tour services, including tour operators, restaurants, hotels, experiences, shops etc.
  • Provide SMME support information such how to register to be a supplier of the City of Johannesburg, how to start a tourism business, tourism compliance information and other general municipal services office.
  • Assist with directions to public and visitors such as where to exchange foreign currency, tourism embassies, companies etc.

Tourist Information Kiosk

If you do not have time to visit the Nelson Mandela Square, you can also find tourist information conveniently situated within the Sandton Gautrain Station. The Information Tourism Kiosk is located beneath Rivonia Road with a pedestrian entrance on the corner of Rivonia Road and West Street, and a vehicle parkade entrance on West Street.

The Sandton Gautrain Station Kiosk provides the following services:

  • A trained tourism ambassador readily shares information about the destination and surrounding areas, where to exchange foreign currency, tourism embassies, and free tourist maps and brochures.
  • Promote local surrounding tourism attractions, tourism products and experiences.
  • Links visitors with tourism business - tour operators, restaurants, hotels, experiences, shops etc.
  • Direct visitors to Nelson Mandela Square VIC to be assisted with bookings for tour services where required.
  • Direct SMME to the Nelson Mandela Square VIC to be assisted information such how to register to be a supplier of the City of Johannesburg, how to start a tourism business, tourism compliance information and other general municipal services office.
