Latest update on the Sandton roads upgrade

The massive R180 million upgrade to roads and walkways in Sandton Central continues apace. This is a much-needed and welcome investment in the road infrastructure of the burgeoning Sandton CBD by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) – a unit of the City of Johannesburg.

Below are the latest timelines and construction programme for the upgrade project, provided by the JDA:
  • January 2016 to  May 2016: upgrade of Maude Street between Rivonia Road and Gwen Lane -includes new cycle lanes and pedestrian sidewalks as well as service detection and relocation of services. 100% completed, back to back kerbs could not be installed due to construction of Village Walk.
  • 29 February 2016 to July 2016: upgrade of Maude Street between Gwen Lane and West Street includes new cycle lanes and pedestrian sidewalks as well as service detection and relocation of services. 70% completed, will be completed end of August excluding in front of Leonardo.
  • 22 April 2016 to 06 September 2016: upgrade and paving of Maude Street from West Street and Fifth includes new cycle lanes and pedestrian sidewalks as well as service detection and relocation of services. Has not started, approved drawings has been issue but awaiting confirmation of start date.
  • 22 April 2016 to 14 February 2017 - Pavement strengthening on Rivonia Road. 30% completed, should compete 14 February 2017.
  • 15 February 2016 to 30 September 2016: Pavement strengthening along Fredman Drive. 70% completed, should complete 30 September 2016.
  • 7 June 2016 to 30 November 2016: Pavement strengthening along Fifth. 3% completed.
  • 7 August 2015 to 30 November 2016: upgrade of Alice Street includes new pedestrian sidewalks as well as service detection and relocation of services. Has not started.
  • 22 April 2016 to 14 February 2017 using the current approved design: Rivonia Road  EB and WB (West Street to Maude Street) 30% completed, should compete 14 February 2017.

While road construction is underway, it is going to require us all – the workers, residents and visitors to Sandton - to be a bit more tolerant of the inconveniences that arise.
